Our youngest students learning Latin – Classics really is for all!

Latin has really taken off at Whitchurch Primary School, with all children in Year 2, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 6 studying the language.  This means over 500 students in the school study Latin!  Year 2 are the youngest year group that Classics for All has worked with, and we are delighted to see how much the children have taken to learning Latin.

Year 2, 3 and 4 have an hour of Latin every two weeks, and Year 6 have a 45-minute lesson every week. We follow the PowerPoints and resources from Maximus Classics created by Charlotte Andrew. And for Year 3, who are now starting their second year we will use Minimus text books. We combine games with grammar exercises as well as translations to and from Latin. The children love it. We started with Year 2 and Year 6 doing Latin last year, and it was so popular with those year groups that we extended it to Year 3 and Year 4.  It is exciting to have so many students learning Latin in the school and we look forward to developing it further here.
