The Latin Excellence Programme needs your help

The Latin Excellence Programme (LEP)  started in September 2022 with £4m of government funding to increase Latin provision for 11–16 year olds in Key Stages 3 and 4 in 40 non-selective state schools. The programme was intended to run for three years with an additional fourth year anticipated but the Department for Education (DfE) included a break clause in the contract. In December 2024 it was decided they would implement this clause and close down the programme with effect from the end of February 2025.

Since December 2024, Classics for All has been working with the DfE and those running the LEP to support the schools with the most urgent needs. Classics for All is committed to supporting all 23 schools with pupils sitting GCSE exams this or next summer and is offering training or support to the others.

We are providing training days, mock exam feedback, supporting and inducting new teaching staff and offering training on long-term planning. Please consider donating to help us ensure Latin is kept on the curriculum of LEP schools.

Our school of the month: St Catherine’s Church of England Primary School, Bolton

St Catherine’s is a small and inclusive school in Horwich, a former industrial town just north of Bolton. In an area of high deprivation, the school caters to a wide range of abilities and socio-economic backgrounds. In 2020 they were trained by us to introduce Latin to help close the vocabulary gap between their ‘word poor’ and ‘word rich’ pupils. Since then the school has been dedicated to their Latin teaching, with one teacher even dedicating their spare time to learn the Latin through the Cambridge Latin Course.

“Classics for All has been instrumental in embedding Latin and classical studies into our curriculum, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of background, can access and enjoy the subject. Their support has made our journey with Latin smooth, enjoyable, and impactful.

From the outset, Classics for All provided high-quality training, ensuring our teachers felt confident delivering Latin lessons through the Minimus scheme. Many staff had no prior experience of Latin, but with expert guidance, we quickly developed the knowledge and enthusiasm needed to bring the subject to life. The initial training sessions not only covered Latin vocabulary and grammar but also explored how to make lessons engaging, linking them to history, literacy, and even music.”
