Xαῖρε! Salve! And hello!
Welcome to The Rostra, Classics for All’s blog for inspired young classicists. I’m Ella, writing as this year’s new Senior Editor for The Rostra, alongside Maariya, our new Junior Editor.
Introducing the editors…
Ella: I’m a 3rd year student at King’s College London, studying a BA in Ancient History and fingers crossed, soon to be an MA. I worked as a copywriter before coming to university and worked as an editor on an undergraduate journal whilst studying abroad at the University of Toronto last year.
- Owns far too many books
- Trying my best to get better at baking
- Hoping to write about classics forever
- 110% wants to see a picture of your dog/cat/cactus
Maariya: I’m a 1st year student at the University of Manchester, studying a BA in History of Art. I’ve studied classics since I was 11, and it eventually led me to writing for competitions, until I started on my own book (coming soon)!
- Usually found in a library or cafe
- Loves to oil paint
- Avid reader of classical literature and historical fiction
- Your go-to source for book recommendations, so please ask
More about The Rostra this year…
This year, we wanted to explore fresh ideas with The Rostra, encouraging our members to submit creative and original content. To kick this off, we’ve decided to switch up blog submissions with a rotating theme, with our first one being: “Your favourite classical figure”.
As ever, we’re encouraging creativity. While we appreciate traditional long-form articles, we’re also happy to receive content such as poems, stories, translations, experience diaries… even a good prose-style rant.
Submissions for proposals are already open! Make sure to check out our call for submissions and submission guidelines on our homepage. Submissions close on Sunday 12 November.
We hope our new thematic approach will help prompt fresh ideas for submissions and further the fun, community-feel of The Rostra. We’ll focus on various themes throughout the academic year - watch this space.
Whether you’re here as a reader or a writer, a passionate classicist or an intrigued beginner, we hope you’re just as excited as we are for the incredible pieces we’ll be posting over the coming year.
Wishing you all the best,
Ella and Maariya x
